Move over lilacs--you’ve been replaced. The spicy sweet scent of Judd viburnum (Viburnum x juddii) is sweep- you-off-your-feet intoxicating!
Prior to my time here at the Brenton Arboretum, I spent over 15 years designing landscapes in central Iowa. I was constantly searching (and still am) for fail-proof plants that looked great and performed well, according to my strict standards, and those of my clients. I am ruthless, so this list is short. It is constantly changing as I discover new cultivars and rediscover oldies but goodies. Judd viburnum has never let me down and remains on the list. I invite you to see Judd viburnum growing here at the Brenton Arboretum behind the office. While you’re here, check out the entire viburnum collection just down the hill from the pavilion. Right now is a good time as their blooms are about to peak.
Speaking of intoxicating…have you seen the crabapple collection lately? Some cultivars are so fragrant and lovely, while others are admired for their unique form. If you come this week, you will see this collection at its very best. It is stunning!
So get out to the Brenton Arboretum soon! You just may discover something that sweeps you off your feet.
